Frequently asked questions about our electric wheel loaders

  • 1. How long can I work with a fully charged battery?

    The electrical running time varies depending on many factors such as individual driving behaviour, type of application and environmental conditions. The achievable running time without intermediate charging varies between approx. 5 hours and approx. 2 hours.

  • 2. Which factors influence the range of an electric vehicle?
    • Type of application: (short vs. long distances, working with bucket vs. working with fork, regeneration phases vs. continuous operation, etc…). The type of application has an enormous influence on the actual running time. Without taking other factors into account, the running time may thus vary by 50% depending on the type of application.
       
    • Surface condition: (asphalt, unpaved gravel path, mainly soft ground, very soft ground). The softer the ground, the higher the power requirement. In addition, the slippage increases on soft ground. Both factors thereby influence the running time of the electric wheel loader.
       
    • Type of terrain: (flat throughout, slight inclines, strong inclines). Driving on inclines increases the power requirement and thus influences the running time of the machine.
       
    • Driving behaviour: Anticipatory driving has a positive effect on the running time. Strong acceleration processes of the machine lead to extremely high energy consumption of the drive motor. The running time can be influenced positively by avoiding strong acceleration processes or by anticipatory driving behaviour.
       
    • Ambient temperature: The ambient temperature also influences the running time of the machine. In particular in winter months, we recommend that the wheel loader be charged and stored at room temperature. For example in a garage or machine hall. In this way, components such as axles, transmissions or even the hydraulic system are kept warm - this also influences the running time.
       
    • Auxiliary consumer : (heater, optional oil cooler, radio, lighting). The heater is by far the largest auxiliary consumer, since it is operated directly from the battery and not, as is usual with combustion engines, via the engine's heat loss. Thus, the influence on the running time is correspondingly large. Therefore we recommend parking the vehicle at low ambient temperatures, if possible in closed and heated buildings. This means that the heater must only maintain the temperature of the cab instead of heating it up completely. The other auxiliary consumers do not have an enormous influence on the running time, but should also be considered for a realistic view.
       
    • Use of the service brake: As soon as the operator takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, the drive switches to recuperation (energy recovery). This means that the kinetic energy of the wheel loader is converted into electrical energy and recovered. During the recuperation phase (vehicle rolls out) electric energy is fed back to the battery. No recuperation is possible when using the service brake.
  • 3. How can I charge the battery of Kramer electric wheel loader?

    The fully electric Kramer wheel loader is equipped with an integrated 230 V alternating current (AC) battery charger with a charging capacity of approx. 3 kW. Charging can be done either with the 5-pin 16 A CEE plug (red) or with the 3-pin CEE 16 A plug (blue) (both plugs are included in the standard scope of supply).

  • 4. Can the battery be intermediately charged?

    Yes. Intermediate charges allow the battery to be recharged at any time, e.g. during breaks. There is no memory effect with the AGM battery used. As a result, the usage time per day and thus also the running time can be significantly extended.

  • 5. What are the charges for a battery charge

    At an electricity price of 30.00 cents per kilowatt hour, a complete battery charge costs € 7.76

  • 6. How long does it take to fully charge the battery?

    With the onboard battery charger (220-240 V) the battery is charged to 100% in 8 hours. The battery is already recharged to 80 % after 5.8 hours.

  • 7. What are the advantages of the built-in AGM battery?

    The AGM battery is a lead-acid fleece battery with the characteristics of a lithium ion battery and is specially designed for applications with high power requirements. Typical application examples are the use in heavy-duty vehicles, where simultaneously occurring load requirements such as lifting, lowering and acceleration continuously occur. The AGM battery is a sealed and maintenance-free battery system. Advantages at a glance:

    • No water refilling necessary
    • Problem-free intermediate charges possible
    • Long service life
    • Coolest drive energy system (lowest loss of efficiency through heat)

  • 8. What are the advantages of the built-in AGM battery as against the Li ion batteries?
    • The significantly higher weight of an AGM battery can be used efficiently as counterweight. With a lithium ion battery, additional counterweights must be installed.
       
    • Lithium batteries have a lower heat capacity which requires active cooling at high discharge currents. Active cooling of the AGM battery is not necessary.
       
    • With the same life expectancy of the battery, lead-acid batteries have a better price-performance ratio.
       
    • The AGM battery’s charging ability and current output capacity at low temperatures is significantly better than that of lithium cells.
       
    • With regard to safety, lithium batteries are difficult to handle. Especially malfunctions and damage to cells pose a high risk (fire hazard). Danger from lithium cells must be prevented by appropriate protective housings.
  • 9. Can the battery be replaced?

    The AGM battery is equipped with crane lugs and forklift lugs. A battery replacement is possible in about 30 minutes. A replacement battery including battery charger can be ordered from Kramer distributor.

  • 10. What happens if the battery of the Kramer electric wheel loader is dead?

    If the last LED of the battery level indicator starts flashing, the last stage of the so-called derating mode starts after a short time. In derating mode, the torque and also the travel speed is reduced - in extreme cases to up to 3 km/h. If the vehicle is operated near a 3 or 5 pin 16A CEE outlet, the vehicle can be operated until the speed is reduced to 3 km/h. The drive is not completely switched off. As soon as the speed has been reduced to 3 km/h, the battery must be charged immediately; otherwise the battery will be totally discharged. Complete discharge must be avoided unconditionally.

  • 11. What about recycling the battery or return?

    According to the battery regulation, battery manufacturers are legally liable to take back your used batteries. In addition, there is an option to return the batteries to a designated recycling centre. More detailed information is available from your responsible Kramer distributor. AGM batteries and their components can be recycled up to 65%. If required, you as a customer will receive a written declaration on the proper recycling of the used battery.

  • 12. What funding options are available for the electric wheel loader?

    Possible state subsidies depend on your location. The different state governments have different rules on e-mobility. Detailed information is available from your Kramer distributor.

  • 13. Is the battery covered by the legal warranty period?

    Yes. The warranty period is a maximum of 1,000 operating hours or twelve months following the delivery by the distributor to its first customer, but no longer than 18 months following shipment from the factory. Furthermore, the warranty period can be extended up to 3 years or 3750 hours. Detailed information is available from your Kramer distributor.

  • 14. Is servicing necessary for the Kramer electric wheel loader?

    Basically, an electric wheel loader must also be serviced at regular intervals. Nevertheless, the electric wheel loader has the following advantages: Fewer components and fewer maintenance points: While on one hand some typical components and fluids of the combustion engine are omitted (these include engine components such as air, fuel and oil filters, V-belts, but also the fluids which need to be replaced at regular intervals), on the other hand the special elements of an electric wheel loader are added to the maintenance list. This includes the annual individual voltage measurement of the battery cells and an insulation measurement. As part of general maintenance, the charging device and cable connections as well as the condition of the battery are also checked.

  • 15. Do electric vehicles produce emissions while driving / working?

    No, with the Kramer electric wheel loader you can work locally completely emission-free. If you charge your electric vehicle with renewable energy, you can improve your CO2 balance even further.
